The European Central Bank or ECB is the authority for the European single currency, the euro. The bank regulates the banking system of the 16 countries part of the European Union that have also switched their currencies to the euro. The ECB main tasks are to; execute monetary policy, perform foreign exchange operations, manage the reserves of the European Union countries and contribute to their payment systems.

The ECB has created a unified holiday calendar to operate the banking system of the Union. This calendar consists of public holidays and TARGET holidays. The TARGET system is the payment system for real time settlements of transactions involving the euro. On TARGET system holidays, transactions involving the euro in the euro money market and foreign exchange market will not be settled. In addition TARGET is closed Saturdays and Sundays.
